Currency, Credit Cards & Banks
Malta adopted the Euro in January 2008. Many hotels and larger shops and restaurants accept foreign currency. Banks are normally open between 08:30 and 13:30 from Monday to Friday and up to 12:00 on Saturday but this may vary. Summer/winter opening hours may differ. Banks, Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) and exchange bureaus can be found all over the Islands.
Driving
In Malta we drive on the left.
Electricity
The electrical supply is 240 volts, 50 hertz. The three-pin rectangular plug system is used, as in Britain. Adapters are very easy to find.
Ferry
Journey between Malta and Gozo takes approximately 25 minutes. More information on ferry timetables can be obtained from www.gozochannel.com .
Geography
The Maltese Islands are some 93 km south of Sicily and some 288 km north-east of Tunisia with a total area of 316 km² divided up between Malta 246 km², Gozo 67 km² and Comino 2.7 km². The total population is approximately 400,000 and the capital city is Valletta.
Health
Hospitals are modern and supported by a regional network of health centres. Travellers do not normally require certificates of vaccination or inoculations to enter the Maltese Islands. It is advisable to take out a personal medical insurance policy. European visitors are recommended to bring an E111 health card to obtain free emergency medical treatment.
Hyperbaric
There are 2 hyperbaric chambers on the islands with hyperbaric doctors on 24 hour duty, both are modern and provide excellent treatment for all diving related incidents

Hyperbaric treatment is free for EU nationals with a valid EU health Insurance card.
Language
English and Maltese. An array of European languages are spoken in tourist areas.
